GOD'S FAMILY

OUR FATHER....

"Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be they name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13)

When our son was approximately 6 years old, my husband thought it would be a good idea to teach our 6 year old son the Lord's Prayer. Each night we began going through the prayer with him slowly so that he could understand and memorize what he was saying. Hearing his precious voice recite such holy words left a huge impression on my heart. The interesting thing was that I found myself dwelling on the words of this prayer as I never had before. I realized the significance of Jesus instructing us how to pray, and as I studied each verse it was incredible to me that He had "covered all the bases" when it comes to things we often pray for!

"Our Father who art in Heaven" The prayer starts by acknowledging that God is our Heavenly Father! Beginning our prayers this way makes it personal because He is a personal God. How wonderful to know he is our Father and will take care of us just as we are His children!

"Hallowed be thy name" Not only are we to call him Father, but we are to praise His holy name! What a way to start a prayer, by first lifting up His name and showing Him praise. We should always humble ourselves before Him because He is worthy of all our praise!

"Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven." This is perhaps my favorite part of the prayer. I grew up hearing my father use this verse in every instance of life, and he always said, "Thy will be done Lord, not mine!" And let me tell you, he meant it! God's will for our lives is already decided in heaven. What we are to ask Him to do is to allow it to be done on earth just as He has planned it in heaven. Only then can His kingdom shine through us! What a blessing!

"Give us this day our daily bread" I'm certainly not a biblical scholar but I take this to mean that we ask God to provide us with all of our daily needs. And notice the word "daily"; we are to go to Him every day in prayer and ask for such needs.

"And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us" Wow! This is a big one! Some versions use the word "debts" or "sins" instead of trespasses, but this is the one I learned as a child. The important thing is that we should ask for forgiveness from our Father each time we pray! And not only for us, but that He would help us to forgive others just as He forgives us.

"Lead us not into temptation" Knowing that we would all face temptation, He instructs us to go to God for help. There is no temptation too big for Him to help us overcome.

"But deliver us from evil" Yes, of course! Please God, keep us safe from all evil and keep angels all around us! I'm so glad that Jesus saw this as something important to pray for because it's certainly a daily prayer of mine. He will keep us safe in his arms, if we just ask Him to protect us.

"For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen" Great! Let's finish our prayers by praising His name once more! It is His kingdom. His is the power. And His is the glory! Amen!! Isn't the usage of the word "is" wonderful! Not "was" but "is"!

Prayer: Almighty God, thank you for being our Heavenly Father. Help me continue to learn from the holy words of Lord's Prayer. I am forever grateful for You and your Word. Amen.
